Module 3 - Awareness Poster (Part 1)

Global warming hit extremely close to home this winter. I live in Dallas, Texas, which is traditionally a warm weather state. Extreme cold weather comes to the state of Texas only a few times each decade, which most attribute to global warming. This time around it was more than extreme weather. The Dallas area experienced multiple inches of snow and below freezing temperatures for five consecutive days. Experiencing this weather first hand prompted me to choose Global Warming to build an awareness poster around.

Glaciers, slowly moving mass or river of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles. Today, about 10% of land area on Earth is covered with glacial ice. Almost 90% is in Antarctica, while the remaining 10% is in the Greenland ice cap. Glaciers are melting around the world at alarming rates. When glaciers melt, because that water is stored on land, the runoff significantly increases the amount of water in the ocean, contributing to global sea level rise. Since the early 1900s, many glaciers around the world have been rapidly melting. Human activities are at the root of this phenomenon. Specifically, since the industrial revolution, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions have raised temperatures, even higher in the poles, and as a result, glaciers are rapidly melting, calving off into the sea and retreating on land.

My first two sketches are meant to bring awareness to the the effects of global warming on the glaciers and polar ice-caps. Much of the "melt" is bought about by human behavior and activities  These activities can be curbed to help protect the planet and prevent sea levels from rising would, some say could eventually leave much of the earth under water.

The third sketch is meant to be a bit more cheeky by displaying the warmer surface of the earth and how the changed planet would fit into the solar system. Along with the planets, the poster would include some dialogue between the Earth and Venus - the hottest planet.

Each poster would also include a list of activities that someone can do to help slow down the warming of the earth.
