Fifty Shades of Grey, is a 2015 American, erotic film drama that was based on a novel of the same name written by E.L. James.
The story includes the romantic relationship between a college student, Anastasia and businessman, Christian. As the relationship begins, Christian introduces Anastasia his secret. Christian does not engage in traditional romantic relationships, and has no desire to fall in love with someone. He achieves sexual gratification by engaging in dominant-submissive relationships where a woman agrees to be submissive in all aspects of her life, and accepts physical punishment when she violates any aspect of their contract. A part of Christian's erotica includes the red room, where many of his sexual escapades take place. During their relationship, Anastasia and Christian uses Christian neck tie as part of their erotica. The book cover for the first book simply shows a picture of that neck tie. It really has no meaning until you read the book.
To recreate the cover I designed sketches that focused more on the significance of the colors in the title and the book. My sketches also take on a play on the words of the title "shades of gray". The final sketch shows a scene from the book that took place in the red room recreated for the cover.
