Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2011 erotic romance novel by British author E. L. James. ... It is notable for its explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving BDSM (bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism). In the book most of this activity took place in the red room led by one of the main characters Christian Gray. The original cover of the book features a single image of a necktie, which you later find out is a necktie that Christian uses in his escapades. The reader is not aware of the significance of the tie until you get into a few chapters of the book.

In redesigning the book cover I decided to go with some very simple by yet very symbolic. The single red square among the shades of gray square represents one of the many facets of Christian Grey. Each of the gray shades represent a different part of Christian Gray. The new cover is meant to showcase the multiple shades of Gray's character. The cover does not include 50 shades of grey because just like the main character in the book, some of those shades remain unseen or are hidden away. The redeigned book cover aligns closely to the title of the book and uses a play on the words in the title. I do believe unless you have read the book, the red square will keep people guessing which would then intrigue them to read more to find out the meaning of that red square. I do believe once by the time they get to the red room, that even though they find out what it represents, it will leave the reader want to know more. The simple nature of the cover combined with the description on the back of the book, creates a mystery for readers that will hopefully want them to open the book and read more.
